The Pimm’s Cup was created in London by the owner of an Oyster Bar named, James Pimm. In the 1840’s Pimm invented this gin based drink as a health tonic. The mixture became so popular over the next decade that Pimm then began selling his top secret concoction commercially and then globally as the fingers of the British Empire reached into India, Canada, Australia and the Caribbean.
The Pimm’s Cup is popular in New Orleans and the UK but prepared quite differently in both places. In New Orleans, the libation created by the Napoleon house involves a tall glass of ice, one-part Pimm’s No. 1, three-parts lemonade, topped with a splash of 7-Up and garnished with a cucumber. It is common to also see lime and mint added, or a combination of tonic water and club soda for those who don’t want it quite as sweet. In the UK, the drink is made in a pitcher filled with ice and generous portion of Pimm’s (and by “generous” we mean ¼-1/3 of the pitcher) and topped with sparking lemonade and garnished with every summer fruit that you can fit into the glass—strawberries, raspberries, oranges, blackberries (anything goes), then mint, sliced cucumber and you’re ready! The drink is so popular in the UK that you can buy premixed Pimm’s cans in liquor stores.
Here at TCO, the Pimm’s Cup is one of our favorite spring cocktail items. It’s perfect for patio drinking, it makes the perfect brunch cocktail and we even enjoy it with lunch and dinner. It’s refreshing and colorful that when you see one sat down at the seat next to you –you can’t help but order yourself a couple. Below is our recipe but we encourage you to doll this drink up however you would like to at home and even make your own spin on the Pimm’s Cup
2oz Pimm’s No. 1
.75oz Barrow’s Intense Ginger
.5oz Strawberry Campari Jam
.75oz Lemon Juice
1.5oz Argus Ginger Perry
2 Cucumber wheels
8 mint leaves
1 cucumber ribbon
Build this drink in a shaker glass. Add pimm’s, ginger, gam, lemon, mint and cucumber. Add a few cubes of ice then shake vigorously for about 10 seconds. Add cucumber ribbon, lemon wheel, lime wheel to the and crushed ice. Strain into hurricane glass, top with ginger cider and garnish with mint sprig. Viola! TCO’s version of the Pimm’s Cup.
