Spring in Chicago is all about new beginnings. Colorful flowers start to pop up on urban streets, natives begin putting their down coats in storage and the city starts to come alive again. So how is Mercat celebrating fresh new beginnings? With a brand new brunch menu, of course!
The ‘Barcelona Brunch’ allows guests to experience a variety of traditional Catalan dishes along with fresh seasonal breakfast fare. One of the favorites from the new menu is the Truita de Samo (pictured), a potato omelette complete with smoked salmon, fried capers, red onion and roasted tomato cream. The Torrijas is a must for those who choose sweet over savory. How could you pass up battered brioche toast, cinnamon sugar and chantilly cream?!
Executive Chef Diego (and Barcelona native) notes that while ‘brunching’ in Barcelona you may end up stopping into 3-4 different restaurants to try various tapas. The ‘Spanish Breakfast for Two’ perfectly encompasses the idea of tasting several different tapas during one brunch experience. This dish was inspired by Sous Chef David Murphy’s most recent trip to Spain. “I had one brunch experience in Spain that was pretty amazing. Fresh fruits, yogurts, cheese and charcuterie. There were also a lot of breakfast experiences where we simply had manchego cheese, Serrano ham avocado and toast with jam. When crafting the ‘Spanish Breakfast for Two’ I was trying to encompass both experiences. It seems like to me in Spain they just really eat throughout the day, and enjoy their food.”
